What is Network?
When multiple computers are connected together to exchange information, than its called network. Networking requires at least two computers.
Networks can generally be divided into three parts.
Local Area Network (LAN):
A local area network is a network consisting of several computers located in the middle of the same building. The data transfer speed of this network is 5 Mbps. The devices used in this network are repeaters, hubs, network interfaces, etc.
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) :
Interfaces consisting of several LANs within the same city are called the Metropolitan Area Network. Such a network can extend up to 50-75 miles. The data transfer speed of this network is gigabits per second. The devices used in such networks are routers, switches, microwave antennas, etc.
WAN (Wide Area Network):
The Wide Area Network is the network established over remote Lens. The data transfer speed of such network is 56 kbps to 1.544 mbps. The speed of the van is changing slowly. The devices used in such networks are routers, modems, van switches, etc.
The topology is the catalog of how computers are connected to a network. Topology plays a vital role in network design. There can be various types of topology – bus topology, star topology, ring topology, mesh topology etc. Below are the different Topology:
A network cable is a cable used to send data from one computer to another.
Different types of cable are used for networking. Ex:
- Coaxial cable
- Twisted pair cable
- Fiber optic cable
Coaxial cables are used in some local area networks. There are several types of coaxial cable. For example, 50 ohm (RG-8, RG-11, RG-58), 75 ohm (RG-59) and 93 ohm (RG-62). The price of this cable is much lower. Made of copper, there are EMI problems.
Twisted pair cable
The twisted pair cable has two doors.
- Shielded twisted pair cable
- Unshielded twisted pair cable
Shielded twisted pair cable
Shielded twisted pair cable has a twist on each twist pair. As a result the electric interface is much lower. The data transfer speed of this cable is 5 Mbps.
Unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable
The unshielded twisted pair cable has no extra shielding outside the pair, only a plastic jacket on the outside. This cable has a data transfer rate of 16 Mbps.
Fiber Optic Cable
Glass is used as a media rather than copper wire in this cable. As a result there is no electro-magnetic interface. The data transmission speed of this cable is much higher. There are two types of fiber optic cable. Single mode fiber and multimode fiber. The main disadvantage is that the price is too high and difficult to install
Repeater is a device used to amplify a signal. If you amplify the signal using a repeater before it crosses a distance of 5 meters, it can go up to 5 meters further. It works in the physical layer of the OSI model.
The hub is a repeater with multiple ports. It works with electric signals. The network address or network adapter does not have a hub headache for Mac address. It also works on the OSI model’s physical layer.
A bridge is a device that connects multiple network segments. It creates bridging tables for each segment to account for different devices. It works in the datalink layer of the OSI model.
The switch is a bridge with multiple ports. It stores a list of the MAC addresses of each node. It works on the OSI model’s data-link layer.
Routing is the process of sending data from one network to another. The router is the device used for routing. It works on the OSI model’s network layer.
The gateway is the device used to connect different types of networks. It translates the protocol. It works in 7 layers of the OSI model.
