What is firewall and Why should you use a firewall?

We’ve heard of firewall all the time, but why is it used? Can it stop the virus? In fact, there is a great chance that you can now use a firewall if your computer has a modern operating system, it is built-in, otherwise, you will have a firewall in your security suite. But what is this firewall for? So keep reading this tune and find out what a firewall is and why it is needed.

What is firewall?

Let’s see what a firewall actually is. You have already understood that it is not related to any spark, any flame, any fuel, or any such combustible substance.

A firewall is a shield that protects your PC, phone, or tablet from the dangers of information-based malware (which is ubiquitous on the Internet).

In cyberspace, data is usually exchanged between your computer, server and router when you are using the Internet. The main purpose of a firewall is to monitor this information (sent in packets) and check whether it is safe.

The firewall does this when the rules are step up. Then it checks the applied rules and sees that the data packet that is going through is acceptable or unacceptable.

Most operating systems (desktop and mobile) have a basic built-in firewall, but for better results can be seen using a dedicated firewall application. Here are 5 reasons why you should use a firewall.

  1. Firewalls can protect your computer from unauthorized remote access.

The worst thing that can happen to a computer user is if someone tries to take control of their computer remotely, if your PC’s mouse pointer on your monitor is automatically misplaced, and if it takes control of your personal information.

A well-configured firewall (and a modern operating system) disables you from remote desktop access, and thus prevents hackers from taking over your computer’s data.

2. A firewall can block content that connects to unwanted content.

Many people are still using older versions of Windows (I mean very old like Windows XP). What’s worse is that they’re not using a firewall in XP, and the built-in firewall isn’t enabled by default.

You read that right. Many malware searches the cyberspace on the Internet. Waiting for an unprotected PC, then grabs it. While your ISP can help prevent this, it is unlikely that they will be able to run it long. And the firewall performs this useful task.

3. Firewalls make online gaming secure.

In the history of video games, online gaming is an important part. There is a lot of fun in playing games in multiple mode. GTA ONLINE is one of the many games in the stream. But there is a potential risk to data security, as online gamers use an insecure or risky game server. The firewall doesn’t let that happen. This makes online gaming more secure.

4. You can block inappropriate content with a firewall.

I mean, we’re talking about blocking remote access threats like hackers and malware. But it’s not just that firewalls are capable of doing this, it can do more. It may also protect you from ransomware directories. Firewall applications also have an option to block specific online locations.

5. Firewalls can be hardware or software.

As I said above, firewalls do not have to be just software. Also hardware firewalls can be found in most homes, not realizing, on your router. You can access it from the router with administrative credentials, and once you sign in you can review its options and change them if necessary.

A few software firewalls:

Norton Internet Security
Kaspersky Internet Security
Macafee Internet Security
Comodo Internet Security
PC Tools Firewall Plus Free Edition
ZoneAlarm Free Firewall
Ashampoo FireWall Free
Online Armor Free
Agnitum Outpost Firewall Free
Filseclab Personal Firewall Professional Edition etc.

In addition, modern operating systems (computers and mobiles) now have a built-in firewall. And it stays active by default. And these are very useful. So there is no need for separate Security if it can be updated regularly. But for more security, you can use External Security. Especially Kaspersky Internet Security. Moreover, you can use ZoneAlarm Free Firewall. Of course, I do not use any External Security, it is done with the default of windows

A few hardware firewalls:

Cisco PIX
WatchGuard
Check Point
NETscreen etc.
